Many of the foundation's programs revolve around the concept of peer learning, a valuable learning tool, especially for the second-stage entrepreneur. Best exemplified by the Foundation's PeerSpectives® Roundtables and Leader Retreats, peer learning is different than seminars, workshops and other educational tools, and incorporates the "group genius" found when entrepreneurs learn from each others' experiences — both the successes and the failures.
When first considering a startup enterprise, entrepreneurs often need basic coaching and hands-on tips about issues such as writing a business plan, leasing space and finding staff. As a firm matures, these needs become more focused, with a special emphasis on growing the business through financing or strategic partnerships. Research from the Kauffman Foundation has shown that businesses in this stage of development, second stage, learn the best from their peers — the people who have "been there, done that." These individuals often become their most credible sources for information and insight as they share similar responsibilities, stresses, opportunities and a passion for growth.
The foundation's direction toward peer learning came, in part, from its founder, Edward Lowe. As the demand for Kitty Litter grew, he found himself diving headfirst into two industries he knew virtually nothing about — mining and manufacturing. He had great employees and advisors, but there were many times he felt alone facing so many challenges. He was quoted as saying, "Many were the times I wished for a mentor — a mentor to help me through those scary and challenging times. Someone who'd been there."
Foundation programs like PeerSpectives Roundtables and Leader Retreats provide second-stage entrepreneurs and leaders of entrepreneurship support organizations a powerful avenue towards peer learning.
